Buy X Get Y — often shortened to BXGY — is a promotion where buying a set quantity or product unlocks another item free or discounted. It's a flexible way to move stock, raise order value, and reward bigger baskets.
What BXGY looks like
- Buy 2, get 1 free — the classic quantity deal on the same product.
- Buy X, get Y (a different product) — buy the main item, get an accessory free or half price.
- Buy from a collection, get a gift — spend within a category to unlock a reward.
- Buy X, get Y% off Y — a partial discount instead of free, to protect margin.
BXGY vs BOGO
BOGO ("buy one, get one") is really just the most common special case of BXGY, where X and Y are the same product and quantity is one. BXGY is the broader idea: X and Y can be different products, different quantities, and the reward can be free or discounted.
Run it without discount codes
Making shoppers hunt for and type a code kills conversions. The better pattern is an offer shown right on the product page that applies automatically at checkout when the cart qualifies — no code, no friction.
Protect your margin
A "get one free" offer gives away a whole unit ofCOGS, so run the numbers first:
Buy 2, get 1 free on a $20 item costing $8. Revenue $40 for 3 units costing $24 →$16 gross profit across the deal. Compare that to selling 2 at full price ($40 revenue, $16 cost, $24 profit). If the free unit drives enough extra volume, it's worth it — if not, switch to "buy 2, get 1 at 50% off" to keep more margin.
