Your Shopify dashboard proudly shows revenue — but revenue isn't profit. After the product cost, fees, shipping, ad spend and returns come out, the number that's left can be a fraction of what you sold, or even negative. This is your true profit, and most stores never see it clearly.
Why revenue is a misleading number
A $100 order feels like a win. But if the product cost $40, the payment fee was $3, shipping cost you $6, and you spent $10 on ads to get the sale, you kept $41 — before returns, packaging and your fixed costs. Scale that across thousands of orders and small blind spots become big losses.
The full cost chain from revenue to true profit
Revenue − COGS (what the product cost you) − Shipping (what you paid to ship) − Payment fees (Stripe / Shopify Payments) − Ad spend (attributed to the order) − Returns (refunds and return costs) − Other costs = Net profit (per order) − Operating expenses (rent, salaries, tools) = True operating profit (per period)
Each line is a place profit leaks. Two matter most: COGS (usually the biggest) and ad spend (usually the most variable).
Net profit vs operating profit
- Net profit (per order) — revenue minus every cost tied to that order.
- Operating profit (per period) — total net profit minus fixed costs that aren't tied to any single order (rent, salaries, software).
Both matter: per-order profit tells you which products and campaigns pay off; operating profit tells you whether the business as a whole is making money.
Margins tie it together
Express profit as a percentage of revenue and you can compare anything — seehow to calculate profit margin. A healthy gross margin can still hide a thin or negative net margin once ads and fees are counted.
How to see your true profit
Calculating this per order, by hand, isn't realistic. ProfitVaultconnects to your store and computes true profit on every order — pulling COGS, fees, shipping, attributed ad spend and returns automatically — then rolls it up into profit and loss by day, product and period. Revenue is easy to see; ProfitVault makes profit just as easy.
